Sign up Page: The 2010 Support Your Local Library Reading Challenge

1. Anyone can join. You don't need a blog to participate.

--Non-Bloggers: Post your list of books in the comment section of the wrap-up post. To learn how to sign up without having a blog, click here.

2. There are four levels:

--The Mini – Check out and read 25 library books.

--Just My Size – Check out and read 50 library books.

--Stepping It Up – Check out and read 75 library books.

--Super Size Me – Check out and read 100 library books.

(Aim high. As long as you read 25 by the end of 2010, you are a winner.)

3. Audio, Re-reads, eBooks, YA, Young Reader – any book as long as it is checked out from the library count. Checked out like with a library card, not purchased at a library sale.

4. No need to list your books in advance. You may select books as you go. Even if you list them now, you can change the list if needed.

5. Crossovers from other reading challenges count.

6. Challenge begins January 1st thru December, 2010.

7. When you sign up under Mr. Linky, put the direct link to your post where your library books will be listed. Include the URL to this post so that other viewers can find this fun challenge. If you’d prefer to put your list in the sidebar of your blog, please leave your viewers the link to the sign up page. Again, so viewers can join the challenge too.

****You do NOT need to review your books. That is optional.****

Kristen howe said...

I've signed up for this challenge and will be ready for it next year. Sounds like fun.

Sheila (Bookjourney) said...

I really should do this... I am not good at supporting my library. I attend their sales... but I am not much of a borrower.... this would be a good challenge for me to really get to know my library.

sallyfromoz said...

I successfully completed this challenge this year - so am up for it in 2010 as well :)

Brimful Curiosities said...

Can I check out kid's books to read with my children or is this just for adults?

Debbie's World of Books said...

I'll be back to sign up. I love this challenge!

HODGEPODGESPV said...

i love libraries...i just can't get there currently....no way to transport wheels in wheels.

Jamie said...

I totally signed up...Now that I'm in good standing again with my local library this should be tons of fun for me!

Pam said...

I really need to use my library more. Even the mini challenge is more books than I've checked out of the library in the past 10 years! Yikes...

Nise' said...

One of my favorite challenges to particpate in (also one of the easiest for me to complete).

J. Kaye said...

Kristen howe - Look forward to you joining.

Sheila (Bookjourney) - I felt that way last year. This one will be different!

sallyfromoz - Me too! I really depend on the library as a major source for books.

Brimful Curiosities - ***All*** checked out books count.

Debbie's World of Books - Can't wait!

HODGEPODGESPV - Now that's a real shame there is no library on wheels.

Jamie - LOL! Nona had to pick up the slack for me this year. ;)

Pam - There ya go!

Nise' - I flip back and forth on my favorite. YA, 100+, and this one rotate...lol.

Michelle said...

this is a good challenge for me. it'll take me back to my "book roots" that is borrowing books (before i started buying every book that interests me). i can't wait :)

sorry, I made a mistake on mister linky. i didn't link my exact post about the challenge on there but here is my challenge post: http://booksandmakeup.blogspot.com/2009/11/2010-support-your-local-library-reading.html

Michelle said...

i'm really sorry for the trouble j. kaye, but is there a way you can unlink me? i'm number 13.

Book Bird Dog said...

I plan to be more active in this 2010 challenge as most of my books will be from the ole librarie...

Our Cozy Little Book Corner said...

I'm so in I'll post my list tonight!!! :)

Cat said...

Most of my reading comes from the library so looking forward to this challenge.

Dave and Tami said...

I work at the local public library and get to select most of the fiction purchased for the library, so 99% of my reading material comes from there. For that reason, I'm not joining the challenge but wanted to say THANKS to all of you who are participating and supporting your public libraries.

J. Kaye said...

Michelle - I have your link updated. No biggie!

Book Bird Dog - This year I plan to limit the amount I join...lol!

Our Cozy Little Book Corner - awesome!

Cat - Although I did check out a lot of books from the library this year, it's not as many as I intended. I plan to really get serious next year!

Dave and Tami - Yes, if we don't use them, we lose them.

Andrea said...

Great challenge! I'm joining again this year.

Jo said...

This is another challenge I'd like to participate in - whenever I get around to making the post for it. And whenever I decide what level to join. I have no problem borrowing library books - just getting around to actually reading them. =) This should help.

J. Kaye said...

Andrea - Love having you!

Jo - Take your time. :) I'm trying to get things lined up to give me more time to close up the 2009 challenges in December.

Teddyree said...

I've just got back into borrowing from the library this year after a 2 year break so I think this will be a wonderful new challenge to participate in. I really want to stick with the library borrowing and a few less purchases :-)

J. Kaye said...

Teddyree - I am looking forward to getting back to being a regular at the library. :)

Jenn M. said...

Little bit embarrassed, but I can't sign up for this challenge until I pay the libray the $11.25 I owe them! I have every intention of paying it! I just haven't yet!

J. Kaye said...

Jenn M. - I think we've all be there...lol. Some of us, like me, more than once. ;)

Jenn M. said...

Good to know I'm not alone! It happened when I moved. Library books got packed in with my books and forgotten about. Whoops!

pussreboots said...

I'm in... just need to write my post.

Melissa said...

signed up.

Marquetta said...

I love this challenge! Just last week I made a vow to get more books from the library instead of purchasing them from a bookstore. Using the library saves me money and space (I'm running out of room for my many, many books) and it helps support my local library. Great idea for a challenge!!

Justine said...

Hooray for this challenge! I'm so excited to start reading in 2010. It'll be fun :D

J. Kaye said...

pussreboots - So glad you're in!

Melissa - welcome!

Marquetta - I can't guarantee how much I will cut back on purchases, but I will support the library as much as humanly possible. ;)

Justine - you and me both!

Jill said...

I go to the library every week. I actually find myself reading library books above books I buy because they have due dates. This week I am skipping the library so I can focus on reading books I spent money on instead. I feel guilty that I spent money and then just let them sit there ignored!

jacobsbeloved said...

I haven't done anything like this since I was in grade school. Since most of my reading material already comes from the library, this will be a good challenge for me.

Kara said...

I'm in!!! Love, love, love, to go to the library. The kids and I have a blast there.

Thanks for hosting this challenge again.

drey said...

I am so in! I'm going to sign up for 75 for next year, I think... This year's 25 came and went so fast, it was like a windstorm. =)

J. Kaye said...

Jill & Kara - Thanks to review books, I've been away from the library more than I normally have. In 2010, things will change.

jacobsbeloved - Awesome! So glad you are joining.

AlleluiaLu said...

I'm going to try the Mini - 25 books. I usually swap my books, but our local library could use the support - so I'm in.

Thanks for hosting!

J. Kaye said...

drey - Didn't it though? And I wasn't even trying hard. Like you, I am going for the gold!

AlleluiaLu - Our library has gotten a lot of hurricane money which was invested in the libraries. This is going to save me lots of $$.

aprilnichole said...

I've never been good with challenges so I'm going to go with one of the smaller ones. But this is a good idea.

Jaime @ Just Add Laughter said...

Can't wait to try this challenge!

Stephanie said...

Just signed up-pretty sure most of these books will probably crossover from the 100 in 2010 challenge. Can't wait to get started!

Nikki @ Bookizzle said...

Well, I signed up! I was only going to do one reading challenge next year but I couldn't help myself. My library knows me by name so I figured, why not?

Looking forward to this!

Diane said...

I'm in again this year, but only for the mini (25 book)commitment as I hope to read more of my own books in 2010. Thanks so much

J. Kaye said...

aprilnichole - That's what I did last year....only I didn't know when to stop signing up for reading challenges...lol. Hope you do better than I did. ;)

Jaime @ Just Add Laughter & Stephanie - Me too!

Nikki @ Bookizzle - What was your other reading challenge you signed up for?

Diane - I can't say that I blame you there. I've gotten rid of most of the books I am no longer interested in. What's left isn't much.

Gwendolyn B. said...

Thank goodness picture books count! We'll have no trouble with this challenge at my house!

Happy Thanksgiving!

LadyD said...

I love our local library. It's right across from the farmer's market! :)

Brianne said...

This sounds fun! And I really should start to use the library more. :)

J. Kaye said...

Gwendolyn B. - I remember those days!

LadyD - wow, that is close!

Brianne - I've made a promise to do more in 2010.

Kim said...

Love it and have already posted about it. Thanks for hosting.
*smiles*

J. Kaye said...

Kim - you are very welcome.

Nan said...

This was one of my favorite challenges in 2009.

4IQREAD said...

Since I work in a library, this will be a fun and easy challenge. I take books home from the library almost every day. Libraries are awesome!

YSPrincess said...

This is going to be my first reading challenge. Can you give me guidelines or suggestions of what I should do once I read the books?

KyleeJ said...

So, I'm a bonehead and signed up the first time with my test blog.... Sorry about that.

I'm going for the Stepping It Up level. My 3yo and I read a lot of library books this year.

Carl V. said...

Count me in. I won't be posting about any of the 2010 Challenges I am joining until I post my New Years Day post, but I've already got a draft of that going and have this challenge linked there. Sounds really fun!

J. Kaye said...

Nan - I think it's hard for be to decide which, the 100+, this one or the YA. They all three overlap each other and fit together so well.

4IQREAD - A dream job!

YSPrincess - If you want to write a review of the books you read, I'll be providing a link up post, but that isn't required. All you need to do is keep a list. When you are done, do a wrap up post listing your books and link that post with Mr linky. There will be a post proved for that as well. If you don't have a blog, just list the books you read in the comment section of the Wrap up post.

KyleeJ - LOL! I've had too many of those moments. ;)

Carl V. - Welcome to the challenge!

Debbie's World of Books said...

I'm wavering now on signing up for this one. I'm going to make it my goal to read more of the books I already own which is well over 200. Decisions, decisions :) Thank goodness for your readalongs to give me motivation.

Anonymous said...

Almost everything I read comes from the library so I'm going to go for Stepping It Up - 75 books.

Lizzie Ann said...

I LOVE my library!! I will sign up for this one and it will save me money while supporting my library!

I'm actually going to start my Januray books in Dec. as I have a baby due in Jan and probably won't be reading much that month.

I'm going to go for Just My Size, and if I read more...YAY! :)

YSPrincess said...

Lizzie Ann, make sure you read to the baby! ;)

Catherine @ The Blonde Diaries said...

What a great challenge! I just joined my local library and have been having a great time checking out books. I am looking forward to participating in this challenge next year!

J. Kaye said...

Debbie's World of Books - I really don't have many of my own books, not if you consider how many I read a month and what's on my shelf now. I counted 2009's books and I think I can make it.

Anonymous - I purchase too many, but I bet that the majority will.

Lizzie Ann - Yes! I am hoping that by signing up for the big one, it will get me out of purchasing so many.

YSPrincess - Good point! And those count.

Catherine @ The Blonde Diaries - Awesome! Love hearing that!

Amy @ Just Book Reading said...

Who doesn't love the library! I'm in for The Mini but I do hope to read more than 25. :-)

Angel Borland said...

Sounds great! I LOVE the library! I am definitely joining!

Tina said...

This is a no-brainer for me. Last year 49% of my books came from the public library. I'm going for at least the same in 2010. Thanks for hosting. Now, if I can just figure out how Mr. Linky works....

Tigermadstanley said...

I am getting carried away now with reading challenges but how could I resist this one? Libraries are so important and this challenge will allow me a reason to get out of the house.
I'm doing this through my homeschooling and private tutoring blog, Homework4Today, where I'll get my students to follow along with me (if they join in I'll try and get them to link to you as well). Thank you for providing a brilliant idea for a fabulous homework resource it's just what I needed to inspire me to get the children reading. I shall have to try and make a reading record for them to use so that I can keep track of them. I like the idea that I will be asking them to use the library as I used to do that all the time when I was teaching.
Not sure which level to aim for yet with the students but I reckon I'll be heading for somewhere near the top.
Blessings,
Amanda x

Great challenge ~ I love the library!

J. Kaye said...

Amy @ Just Book Reading - You'd be surprised! There are lots of readers who do not.

Angel Borland & nancysblogtwo - Me too!

Tina - I'd say that is close to my average. The kids really help.

Tigermadstanley - I am a home school mom. When I saw it on your blog, I thought that was way cool!

Karen said...

I love my library and am there at least once a week. I will easily read 100 books or more next year between my own books and reading to my daughter. This is a great reminder to all of us to utilize our wonderful libraries and librarians. Plus it's less stuff in our house when we borrow the books! It's a great way to go!

drbethnolan said...

I'm a challenge newbie, but LOVE this! I'm a big library supporter and we have just built a new one in our town - opening in January. I'm excited to post about it on my blog. -beth ;)

Sandy Jay said...

I'm don't have a blog and I've never done a challenge but I'm jumping in on this one.

I'm pretty sure I already do this at the Super Size Me level every year, so I might as well sign up for the challenge!

Elizabeth said...

I found it! Can't believe I didn't see it before.

Tina said...

J.Kaye....great challenge and I'm really looking forward to it. I think I did not sign up correctly at Mr. Linky (I've never done this before) at #114--did not do the link to my challenge post. So I resigned up. can you delete the linky #114 link? Let me know if there's anything else I'm supposed to do besides just post books I've read there on my post right?

Suzanne said...

I'll be "stepping it up". Very excited about this challenge.

Melissa said...

Great Challenge! I picked "Just My Size" but since I'm also hoping to do the 100+ in 2010 maybe I can get up to the "Stepping it Up" Level! :-)
Can't wait to check out the rest of your blog! :-)

Grilsgood said...

Supersize me, did over 450 this year, but hope to cut back by 100

Aths said...

This should be easy for me, but I will still aim for the 50 books level, since I want to clear off my shelves as well, in 2010.

JG said...

I mostly need to read my owned/unread books, but I'll still be hitting the library. I'm going for The Mini Challenge. Thanks for hosting!

bloggeralice - I do too, but it's a great way to help promote our love for the library.

Elizabeth - This blog is a bit crowded...lol. Easy to miss.

Tina - I can! No biggie.

Suzanne - I agree. Can't wait for 2010.

Melissa - Both of those work really well together. :)

Grilsgood - Way to go!

Aths - I hear ya. I did that in 2009, but the stacks are slowly coming back.

JG - Understand! And you can always increase later.

Book Crazy Jenn - Great! I love our library. :)

This is my first challenge I've ever signed up for. I've just discovered these challenges. Reading is my passion and I got my library card this year to save money. I want to sign up for the 100 books to read, but I don't know how. I don't have a blog, but I would love to learn about how to create one.

Juliann said...

this is the challenge for me! I love my library and I have not worries about making at least the mini-challenge mark - thanks

The library is where I get my books. This will be fun. I've never kept track of what I've read before. This will be one my resolutions- to start keeping track of what I've read!

orannia said...

All signed up! I've stuck with 50 books again this year as I only just (51) made it last year so I wanted to keep it reasonable :) Hopefully, I can surpass myself in 2010. Thank you so much for hosting J. Kaye :)

Thanks for hosting this challenge: I borrowed about 50 last year, many of them audio books because I listen to them nearly every day while driving to work - and they're expensive to buy. However I'm making a bit of an assult on the TBR in 2010, so I'd better not be too ambitious.

Just joined & looking forward to it. I am new to the world of reading challenges -- learning as I go. I plan to go "Super-Size Me" with this one. I read 122 in 2009 and almost all were library books.

Sallie (FullTime-Life) said...

I have signed on and linked to my blog (it isn't a book blog, but I write about books and libraries and reading sometimes). I know I can read 25 library books, probably 50. I've always wanted to try to keep better track of what I'm reading, so listing the books is my personal challenge for the year as well.

J. Kaye said...

Jules - Mine too!

Page (One Book At A Time) - Ugh! My heart goes out to you. This year I am putting mine all on one page.

Sallie (FullTime-Life), SarahT, ck.twilighter, mlisame, Chloe, bokunosekai, Orchid, orannia, Maxine, Candice, & Juliann - Fantastic! I am so glad to have you join!!

anzlitlovers - Love the audios from the library! Does your library have OverDrive?

Jan in Edmonds - Yes! I am so glad you are joining again this year!

suzilove - I have no idea how many I will read. Like you, I'll be keeping a track even if I pass a 100. Wouldn't that be cool?

Another challenge. Wow. I'm going to busy reading to meet this one. But as of tomorrow, I go pick up my second library checkout of the year so I should meet at least the 25 level this year. I don't have a blog so I'll have to post my list on this site.

Keesh said...

I did ok wit this challenge last year...30 of 50. This year I will aim for 25 so that I can also concentrate on reading 25 books that are on my own book shelves waiting to be read.

YAY! A challenge I know i can meet :) We go to the library every week and I love libraries in general! This year I have already read "Twilight" and "The Year of the Flood" via my library and I am now reading "The Children's Room" by AS Byatt.
And just to add on :) I hope all participants consider donating to their libraries and/or supporting teh Friends of teh Library groups nationwide. Thanks for this great challenge!

Hi, I just signed up. I'm hoping this challenge keeps me at the library and out of the bookstores. I've started reading my first book of the challenge and can't wait to keep going.

dreadfulpenny said...

There is nothing that I love more than my local library. (Well, maybe my husband. And cake. But the local library is right up there.) Super Size Me, please! (In fact, I"m gonna try to double that.)

elysabeth said...

Posting updates on my blog as I remember them. Right now, about two books a week but things are about to get crazy for me as I have three stories to write within a short period of time. Plus work a full time job, deal with teenagers, and do all my book related promoational stuff. I'll make it I hope. Don't remember what I said I'd shoot for - I think 50 (will have to double check that), which is very doable for me since that is only about a book a week average.

I also issued this challenge to the 6th grade class I work with online. They all got library cards back in September during library card month. So I'm offering them prizes at levels of 10, 25, 35 and 50 books being read (checked out from their local library and the teacher's library since he just set up a system in his class with almost half his collection that they have library cards and all to check the books out - he's even got the books barcoded for checking out purposes) by the end of the school year which for them is like May 25, I think. So hopefully some of them will meet the goals and shoot for some of the bigger goals.

See you all in the postings - E :)

I am choosing the Super Size Me option since I work at a local library and so far every book I've read this year has come from the library!

maphead said...

Great idea ! At the end of last year I did a quick count and I read 65 books from my local library. I hope to do the same this year !

Stacy said...

Ok, I'm going to try for 50...my problem is I forget to turn the books back in, get frustrated after those fines and then stop going after I pay off my astronomical fines. BUT, with this Challenge, I will be a good girl this year...

porcelaine said...

I initially considered going for 75, but I allowed myself to be swayed and elected to try 100 instead.

pinuccia said...

I am a really really late comer to book blogging world and I wanna take this challenge to see how much I can read from my company's library where I have quite limited options. I'll go for 25.

Kathy (mommysreading) said...

I am also a late comer to this challenge. I have only been blogging and reading blogs for just over a month. I think I can get the hang of challenges now and this one is great. Thank you

Didn't state how many library books I would read in 2010 - but I'm sure it will be more than 100.

However - shame on me - I STILL purchase and read a lot of books!

The library is my second home so this challenge will be extra fun for me.

LJK said...

I'm in! Hopefully this will get me to borrow instead of buy, but I do have to walk right by a lovely bookstore to get to my library.

Laura said...

I'm stepping up from 25 to 50! I can't believe I've already hit the 25 mark, and it's only the end of March - SO unlike me! Looking forward to catching up on everyone else's threads in the near future!

Tura Lura said...

Bit of a latecomer, but I just found out about this challenge last night!

I'm in for 50 books, though I may end up stepping up to 75 (or even 100!) at some point. ^_^

Thanks for the challenge! I just found out about it today.

I have read 13 library books so far this year, so my goal is probably 50 for 2010.

Can't wait to get started on this one. I check out books all the time for both my daughter (who is three) and myself. So this should be a breeze!

#56 on my library list is proving to be a delightful book. Just a snippet from Whistlin' Dixie in a Nor'Easter:
Memphis is my home. It always will be no matter where I live. In the South we have a tendency to be possessive of our hometowns. A Memphis girl can marry a Birmingham boy, raise her family there, and live out the rest of her days in Alabama. But when her obituary runs in the Birmingham Post-Herald, it will still claim Memphis as her home.

Just My Size! I'm excited, my first challenge!

I'm entering the Super Size Me! So excited!

I've been participating in spirit since January, but I finally remembered to sign up!

I've already read about four books, and I'm about to finish my second audiobook.

Fittingly, it's about literature: A Way with Words II: Approaches to Literature. I highly recommend it! I intend to find out if the rest of the Modern Scholars series is just as good. :)

I love my library. I check out tons of books both from my local library and the library I work at.

Look at all these comments! I'm going for the Supersize now -- seriously underestimated the number of library books I'd read. Finished my 25 already. Yay! Thanks for doing this.

I just found this challenge and since most of my reads are library books I figured why not.

Lit Addicted Brit said...

Hi!

I've just started a blog and I've just got to start visiting the library more to afford the habit so this seems like the perfect challenge!

I always think local libraries need more support so this is a FAB idea!

Thanks :) x

THe Libraries need all the support they can get, there was an article in I think it was the guardian, stating some of the gov't ideas for saving money, I have it linked on my blog.

parrish lantern said...

The link concerning the libraries mentioned in my last comment is via here http://parrishlantern.blogspot.com/2010/06/andrew-motion-attacks-catastrophic-plan.html

Do you have a link button I can place on my blog?, if not I'll use the picture with my book list
Thanks

parrish lantern said...

You're gonna hate me, by the time I've finished, but this is such a great idea & I'm limited to the time I have (work etc), so Sorry for the excess of posts & comments, after this initial rush it will slow down.
Thanks again

Another review post by The Parrish Lantern, this is one of three books by Taichi Yamada(only reviewed 2 tho)that I've read, a writer worth finding if you've not done so already

parrish lantern said...

My aim is to read a 100 & have just passed the halfway mark.Hope I can complete it by dec.

Alysha DeShaƩ said...

I know that I'm signing up really late, but I do read a lot and I use the library tons so I'm sure I'll get pretty close to the 100 mark if I don't make it. That being said, I'm signing up for the "Super Size Me" level and my lists will be linked from my main reading challenges page as well as on your reviews page. :-)
